I recently mentioned Superfood Chlorella on Instagram and some of the health benefits but wanted to share a bit more information on this fabulous little freshwater blue-green algae species.
Chlorella has been around for a very long time… one of the oldest species on the planet. Similar to spirulina that it is a freshwater algae but single celled freshwater algae.
Chlorella gets its rich green color from chlorophyll and is known to having the highest chlorophyll content amongst all plants. Plus has the ability to reproduce about eight times in one day, making it very sustainable and one of the most nutrient dense foods in the world claimed by many sources.
Chlorella Nutrients
For consumption, chlorella has a hard outer shell so it must go through a special process to crack the outer shell in order to be digested and obtain all of its nutrients.
Rich with phytonutrients, including amino acids- the nine essential amino acids making it a complete protein source, beta-carotene, potassium, phosphorous, biotin, iron, zinc, magnesium and the B-complex vitamins.
Provides more nutrients per gram than other greens such as kale, broccoli and spinach.
Chlorella Benefits
Mainly known as a superfood for detoxifying and alkalizing the body.
Binds to heavy metals and unwanted chemicals, and removes these harmful toxins from the body which allows for overall better health.
Other benefits include:
- Eliminates bad breath
- Repairs nerve tissues
- Improves digestion by increasing the “good” bacteria
- Boosts immune function
- Supports healthy PH levels in the gut
- Levels blood pressure
- Keeps blood sugar level in check which allows for proper weight management
- Enhances wound healing
- Reduce side effects from radiation/chemo treatment
How to Consume Chlorella
Chlorella comes in powder form and as a tablet. Mixing the powder in smoothie or juice blend is a popular choice. I prefer the tablet form and take 4-6 tablets in the morning and 4-6 tablets at night.
If you decide to include chlorella in your supplement rotation, make sure to buy a reputable brand. Some chlorella brands have been found to be polluted with heavy metals and a reduction in the nutrients. Here are a few brands that are reputable and provide a quality product.
- HealthForce Chlorella Manna
- Garden of Life
- Sunfood
As always, before taking any supplement always consult with your primary physician or healthcare provider to discuss your dietary and supplemental needs.
